No wifi connection,
just a better kind of connection…

Volunteering in the sunny, coastal, nature reserve on the beautiful cliffs above the ice cold water on the southwest of Portugal. One of my favourite weeks abroad so far.

The pine trees dance in the wind, the birds sing louder than any neighbours, the sun glistens all day, and the pages of your book turn so effortlessly.

As a volunteer at Offline, it wasn’t mandatory for me to hand in my cellphone and laptop, and I could still access the wifi out of sight of any guests. The wifi didn’t reach my bedroom though, so I found myself falling asleep so peacefully to the sound of the wind or pages of my book, instead of the bright light of my screen, scrolling through pictures on instagram. I still found myself waking up and checking my emails etc however. But watching the guests struggle on and enjoy their time without a worry in the world made me crave that feeling too.

I handed my devices over one evening. I don’t remember which day it was because when you’re so relaxed the days of the week don’t matter, and you embrace every day with the same happiness as every “weekend”. I went to sleep with no care to check snapchat or facebook, and asked my friend to wake me up when his alarm went off. It was kind of a weird realisation that every day I use my cellphone to wake me up. And I was confused what to use to make sure I was up on time to serve breakfast. I left the windows open and let the sunshine ease me awake, it was so much nicer than waking to darkness.

I lost track of time, finished my book in the sun lying outside by the pool, we did yoga, I went for a swim, we played music with everyone by the fireplace inside at night, we played card games, we laughed. It felt like home. But in Portugal I was as far away from home in New Zealand as I physically could possibly be. Only two days without connection felt like an amazing week long holiday.

There’s no wifi connection out here, but there’s an even better kind of connection…
