Volunteering at Offline

My name is Maria and I’m from Germany, where I studied Biochemistry before I started volunteering for the Offline House here in the beautiful Algarve. As a mid-twenty of course I’m fully part of the technology-addicted-social-media-generation which is why I want to tell you how I started to enjoy too if I forget where I last put my phone.

You probably noticed that this year is a leap year, as everybody in the social networks was getting crazy about the “gained day”. Luckily 29th February was my day off duty, so – following our concept – I chose to unplug.

Unplugging is a term referring to living your normal life or vacation without

modern technologies and internet for the sake of digitaldetox. It’s said, and I’m about to verify that, that it cleanses your mind, helps you focus better and sleep and socialize in everyday.

I always feel healthier starting my day with some morning sports, so I got and put on my joggers for a run. Heading west, I followed the street to the end that, after a roundabout, led to some super high and windy cliffs with ruins of a 13th century battalion. An amazing view on the rough ocean and sea gulls soaring in the strong winds opened up to me whenever my whirled hair would allow me to catch a glimpse. Nature, just 2 minutes out of the closest civilization, was so strong and raw here, that you could physically sense the danger the lay in the air even through the stunning beauty.

After my fingertips started to get slightly blue-ish (which is my method of measuring time now as I’m not using my watch neither) I decided to walk back through the little village of Vale de Telha and watched all the tidy white homes, the wind-bent trees and free running dogs. Back in the house a long shower helped my getting back to my normal body temperature.

Prepared with an enormous cup of green tea, a yoga mat and a fluffy pillow I made my way to the pool, where the sun was just drying the morning moisture of the grass. While I was taking all necessary time (and I think it might have been 3 hours) to write my long-forgotten travel diary, I felt how I lost interest in what ever time it might be and instead started to fully enjoy what I did.

Even now just after half a day, I felt how my brain was processing memories and thoughts way more effectively than on a normal “online” day. I was so

content with just sitting in the sun, finally having time to read some of the many books I optimistically put into my backpack, before I left Germany.

And this would continue the day.

So how do I explain those effects?

Try to imagine your daily routine. Now think of all the times you use your phone. For me that is when I wake up (like 70% of all people), during breakfast, while I work, when I go for a run (even though I told myself to only use it for music), in the pub (when I should be rather communicating with friends without simultaneously checking my Instagram followers), just before I go to bed.

And now – imagine you’d have all those little breaks only for yourself…
